Research Residency at the University of Akron
Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, John Heginbotham is a Brooklyn-based choreographer, performer, and teacher. He creates work known for its “tight formal structure and inventive movement, bolstered by a disarming wit and strangeness” (The New Yorker). He founded Dance Heginbotham in 2011.. DH has shared the stage with music icons including Alarm Will Sound, Brooklyn Rider, Gabriel Kahane and Shara Nova, and members of The Knights orchestra.
Heginbotham was awarded a 2014 Jacob's Pillow Dance Award, a 2017/18 New York City Center Choreography Fellowship, was a 2016 Fellow at NYU's Center for Ballet and the Arts, and is a two-time recipient of the Jerome Robbins Foundation New Essential Works (NEW) Fellowship (2010, 2012). Heginbotham and Dance Heginbotham have been invited to participate in creative residencies at BAM Fisher, The Banff Centre, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Brooklyn College, CUNY Kingsborough, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, LMCC's Extended Life program on Governor's Island, and the Watermill Center.
In February 2018, Heginbotham was selected to participate in NCCAkron's second-ever Research Residency and was situated in the University of Akron School of Music. His initial visit saw him working with UA faculty members Robert Brownlow and James Wilding as well as music composition students to research modular and chance elements in music and their application to choreography. His future Research Residency visits over the next three years will see him further interacting with the UA community as he continues to explore a range of interests including "current 3D video technology, motion capture, VR and mushrooms" (interview with DanceInforma).
